Western Corporate Federal Credit Union filed an April 20 lawsuit against a group of unnamed John Does who gained access to its e-mail system and sent an upsetting e-mail to all employees.
The April 6 email warned employees that the NCUA planned to lay off staff from the freshly-seized corporate in an attempt to cut costs.
Pink-slipped employees were listed by name, along with supposed annual salaries. It claimed the employees "have been rated as grossly overpaid, ineffective and unqualified for their current position, or currently hold a position that contributes nothing to WesCorp."
The suit alleges a non-employee called WesCorp's Information Technology Office, claiming to be an employee in need of an e-mail password reset. The duped IT department reset the password, giving the defendant e-mail system access.
WesCorp was forced to "disavow the authenticity of the e-mail, and to assure employees that their jobs were not in immediate jeopardy, and that the platintiff's information and record keeping systems were sound and secure," according to the complaint.
However, the suit may not go anywhere; the most recent action on the suit is a Sept. 23 hearing to show cause for dismissal, because WesCorp attorneys failed to file proof of service.
"If the proof of service is filed prior to the next court hearing date, then no appearance shall be required," stated the Los Angeles County Superior Court document.
