Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher Dodd (D-Conn.) announced Friday that he has prostate cancer, but it was caught in the early stages.

Dodd, who has been in the Senate since 1981, is scheduled to have surgery after the Senate goes into recess at the end of this week.

He said that the biopsies indicated that he had a minimal amount of cancer, the disease hadn't spread and he expects a full recovery.

Dodd has been pulling double legislative duty in recent months. In addition to the Banking Committee, which has worked on a range of issues relating to financial services, housing and regulatory restructuring, he has been chairing the panel that is taking a key role on health care reform.

On the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, he has been filling in for Chairman Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.), who is suffering from brain cancer.

Dodd said the illness won't change his decision to seek reelection next year. Current polls show him with low approval ratings and trailing several prospective Republican opponents.
