The House yesterday passed a measure to extend the National Flood Insurance Program through next March and also made communities with state or locally funded levee improvements eligible for some federal funding.

The bill, which passed on a voice vote, awaits Senate action.

The insurance program is set to expire at the end of September.

House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank (D-Mass.) said the measure gives lawmakers time to revisit the flood insurance issue and look at some of the program's longer term challenges.

His panel is likely to hold additional hearings on the subject when Congress returns from its recess in September.
