Cognizant of economic conditions and the corporate expense, the Kansas Department of Credit Unions said this week it is waiving 2009 examination fees "on a one time basis" for CUs under $1 million.

"This is a gesture we are making for those very smallest credit unions that may be struggling," said Richard Yadon, the department's chief examiner.

The fee elimination, to continue "for only one year," takes effect this month under the 2009 fiscal budget. There are eight Kansas CUs that fit the category, he said.

Yadon said he was unfamiliar with what his counterparts in other states might be doing on that front but NCUA has long had a practice of aiding the very smallest CUs.

An NCUA spokeswoman said "for some years" there has been no annual operating fee for FCUs with assets below $500,000. However, "all federally insured credit unions must maintain 1% of insured shares in the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund," she noted.

The move by the Kansas Department comes amidst a handful of voluntary mergers of smaller CUs under way this month with forecasts of as many as eight more in the pipeline.
