To help educate companies about hiring persons with disabilities, NuUnion Credit Union has joined a new, statewide council to carry out that mission.
The council, which met for the first time on June 18, is a partnership between the Michigan Business Leadership Network and the Capital Area Michigan Works. Working with officials, members will help educate employers on the Americans with Disabilities Act as well as share information on tax incentives and accommodations for hiring persons with disabilities. According to Michigan officials, the unemployment rate for this group is 11.5%.
In addition to the $837 million NuUnion, the council's members also include Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Michigan State University, Lansing Community Colleges and several nonprofit organizations and businesses. The council has not come up with an official name yet.

NuUnion President/CEO Steve Winninger told the Lansing State Journal that he has hired people with disabilities and knows first hand how they can contribute at work.
"I understand how cultures need to change and how difficult that is," Winninger said. "If we can do something to help people look past disability and see ability, that's a good thing."
