State Employees Federal Credit Union, Albany, N.Y., donated $10,000 to Whitney M. Young Jr. Foundation, the fundraising arm of Whitney M. Young Jr. Health Services. The donation will fund two projects: $7,000 will assist uninsured children in accessing primary and preventive health care services through the Uninsured Neighbors Fund, and $3,000 will be used to purchase medical equipment needed to outfit a new exam room at the Troy Health Center. MidWest Financial Credit Union, Ann Arbor, Mich., donated new shoes to 298 children in the Ann Arbor area through its Shoes That Fit program. MidWest Financial obtained help from the schools in identifying children in need and made sure that every child on the list got a new pair of shoes. Shoes That Fit is a national nonprofit organization started in 1992. Today, more than 770 schools in 31 states participate in the program through partnerships with businesses, colleges and community service groups. Maine Credit Union League, Westbrook, Maine, raised $375,000 in 2008 through its campaign for ending hunger. Checks were distributed to representatives from credit unions from across the state, who in turn distributed the checks to local food pantries and hunger organizations. Since 1990, the Maine Credit Unions’ campaign for ending hunger has raised over $3.1 million. All funds raised stay in Maine and go directly to the cause of ending hunger. Neighbors Credit Union, St. Louis, supported the Friends of Kids with Cancer organization by providing a donation. Employees of the credit union’s IT department made the contribution in lieu of exchanging gifts with one another. The Neighbors donation will be used to increase educational, emotional and recreational programs for children undergoing treatment for cancer and blood-related diseases and their families. Desert Schools Federal Credit Union, Phoenix, raised $230,000 to benefit Phoenix Children’s Hospital and the Children’s Miracle Network at the credit union’s 11th annual CMN golf tournament at the Blackstone Country Club in Peoria, Ariz. The Desert Schools charity golf tournament is a fundraising event held in conjunction with Desert Schools’ business partners.

The campaign’s three chairs, Dan Dillon and Sherry Van Bramer from Greylock Federal Credit Union and Kathy Chenail from Greylock Insurance Agency, worked to coordinate events that encouraged employee participation. Greylock also donated the services of Relationship Development Officer Dan Dillon and Marketing Services Coordinator Joanne Billow through the community advocate program at the United Way during the campaign fund drive this year. Greylock’s corporate donation provided an additional $29,691, including a partnership with Johnson Ford to donate a car raffled off in support of United Way.
