The Massachusetts Credit Union League said Wednesday New England CUs have now raised $180,000 to support the Homes for Our Troops charity.

"We're just pleased that New England credit unions have responded so well," said a spokesman for the Massachusetts League coordinating CU contributions raised by the Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire leagues to help pay for a gala dinner in Boston this Saturday.

Money from the CU effort will defray expenses for the Boston fundraiser as well as go toward construction of a home in New England for a handicapped vet. Selection of the recipient is expected to be announced at a Boston dinner sponsored by Homes for Our Troops.

Joining with CUNA and state leagues, Homes for Our Troops, a Taunton, Mass. nonprofit, has a similar state-wide fundraiser underway in Missouri, having completed two now-occupied vet homes last summer during the Republican and Democratic conventions.

Earlier this week, Service CU in Portsmouth, N.H. said it had made a $75,000 to the Homes for Our Troops cause.
