The number of people receiving unemployment insurance fell for the first time since January, the Labor Department reported today.

There were 6.7 million receiving benefits last week, a decline of 15,000 from the previous week. First-time claims were 621,000, compared with 621,000 for the previous week.

The glimmer of good news comes one day before the department announces unemployment figures for May. In April, unemployment was 8.9%.
