California credit unions turned up the big winners in a virtual award ceremony for the 2009 "Best of MAC" competition conducted by the Marketing Association of Credit Unions.
In an association first handled via the internet and announced Thursday, MAC said CoastHills FCU of Lompoc won first place with its "Deals for All Wheels" campaign in the MACQUEE competition.
Scott Coe, senior vice president-marketing, accepted the award for his CU. The other three MACQUEE finalists were FAA First FCU, Los Angeles; Pacific Service CU, Walnut Creek and Valley First CU, Modesto.

The trade group disclosed its MACQUEE winners the same week it had planned to hold its annual conference in San Antonio, called off because of CU travel constraints hitting marketing departments.
CoastHills' "Deals for all Wheels" campaign promoting auto loans was conducted April 1-July 31 of last year and drew more than $100 million in loans, which was over five times the marketing goal. In addition, the credit union brought in 3,750 new member accounts.
The campaign used a 30-second TV spot produced at a local drive-in theater and was designed to offer auto-loan competition to the popular manufacturer's discount and to remind members that they have alternatives to other local lending agencies.
"The manufacturer discounts and rebates often apply to a limited set of vehicles and high-demand models typically don't offer factory incentive financing and accordingly CoastHills could compete by financing these vehicles," explained Coe, the CoastHills executive.
