In another sign that the economy is still sluggish, housing starts fell 12.8% last month, to 458,000, the Commerce Department reported today.
April's figures represent a 54.7% decline since April 2008. In March, housing starts fell 11.0%.
Single-family housing starts were 2.8% below the March level. Single-family housing completions increased 4.9%.

Building permits fell 3.0% in April and were 50.0% below April 2008.
The Northeast, Midwest, South and West experienced month-over-month decreases of 30.6%, 21.4%, 21.1% and 42.5%, respectively.
Year-over-year housing starts declined in all regions: 45.7% in the Northeast, 52.5% in the Midwest, 57.0% in the South and 52.9% in the West.
