Alvin W. Jordan, the former president/CEO of the Iowa Credit Union League, died April 18. He was 101.
"Al Jordan was one of the greatest credit union advocates in the 20th century," said Patrick Jury, president/CEO of the Iowa league. "He was the central figure in the development of the league, and our industry mourns his passing."
With a career spanning seven decades, he served as treasurer of the old Western Union Employees CU from its founding in 1938 until he joined the staff of the league in 1953. He retired in 1981.
He started at the league as a field representative, helping to organize new CUs and assisting existing ones in operations.
When the managing director resigned in 1953, the board named Jordan temporary director, making the position permanent in 1954 with the title later changed to president.
Among honors over the years, the National Credit Union Foundation gave Jordan its highest honor, the Herb Wegner Memorial Award, and in 1955 the National Cooperative Business Association inducted him into its Hall of Fame at a National Press Club dinner.
