Citing misconduct by prosecutors in its own department, the U.S. Department of Justice today announced it was asking a federal judge to drop corruption charges against former Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska.
The department's prosecutors working on the case withheld evidence from Stevens' attorneys.
In October, Stevens was convicted on seven felony counts of failing to disclose gifts he received from a politically-connected businessman. Stevens was defeated for reelection in November, he had held the seat since 1968.
Stevens was a senior member and former chairman of the Appropriations Committee.
CUNA's political action committee contributed $4,600 to Stevens' reelection campaign during the 2007-2008 cycle.
