ST. LOUIS — The Missouri Credit Union Association said it is temporarily pulling the plug on its first "homes for our troops" facility after the recipient was convicted of a felony involving a controlled substance.
The trade group, which has been involved in fundraising for months to erect the home in Branson, said it was informed this week by a Massachusetts military charity and builder of troop homes across the U.S. that the agency on its own it had "withdrawn its support" to build the planned Branson home in light of the crime.
The Taunton, Mass.-based Homes for Our Troops group informed MCUA that Sgt. Scott West, who was severely injured in Iraq, "had pleaded guilty to a felony crime" and therefore under the agreement with HFOT become ineligible to receive the property.

"As you can imagine, this decision and notification was not easy for HFOT," said Rosie Holub, president/CEO of MCUA adding that her trade group would continue with CU fundraising to erect another facility for a different veteran. HFOT, she said, "has built 35 homes and plans to complete more than 30 this year." MCUA, she concluded, "continues to support this organization that builds specially adapted homes."
In building homes for injured veterans, HFOT played the identical role for CUNA in arranging troop homes during the Democratic and Republican National conventions last summer.
