SYDNEY, Australia — Police in the Australian state of New South Wales are forming a task force with financial firms and retailers to combat an epidemic of attempts to steal money from ATMs by blowing them up, according to press reports.
Even though there appears to be consensus that the thieves usually fail to get any money, they are able to get enough over multiple attempts to make them worthwhile, the police have said. Three or four successful attacks out of 25 have yielded hundreds of thousands of Australian dollars, police have estimated.
