CUNA's Eleanor Jacobs Passes at 95

MADISON, Wis. — The credit union community is mourning the loss of former CUNA Assistant Managing Director Eleanor Jacobs, who died at the age of 95.
Jacobs got her start at CUNA by working for the Latin American regional office in Panama. In 1972, CUNA Managing Director/President Herb Wegner invited Jacobs to Madison as special assistant in charge of public relations and advertising. Promoted later that year to assistant managing director, Jacobs became the first woman to serve on the seven-man executive team and received numerous awards for her work. Although she retired from CUNA in 1976, Jacobs remained active in the credit union community serving on the board of the National Association of Retired Credit Union People and the Herb Wegner Memorial Fund.
Remaining active to the end, Jacobs recently lent her expertise
to a national campaign to improve nursing home quality and
published a memoir this past summer, From Manhattan to Madison,
the Long Way Around.
She is survived by her only daughter, Diane, three step-grandchildren and four step great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations be sent to the Attic Angel Community in her memory.
