WASHINGTON – CUNA's political action committee-Credit Union Legislative Action Council-raised $4 million in 2007 and 2008, the group reported today.

The amount, which is the most in the organization's history, enabled the group to participate in 83% of the 470 U.S. House and Senate races this year and it backed the winner in 92% of the races in which it supported a candidate.

CULAC contributed more than $2.9 million to federal candidates and committees and spent $528.000 on independent expenditures. It now has about $100,000 left in its treasury to begin its work in the next cycle.

The average contribution to the PAC was $26, much of it raised through a payroll deduction program, in which more than 2,800 people participated.

CUNA President and CEO Dan Mica said the $4 million is a "significant milestone that places credit unions in the upper-tier, elite echelon of political action across the nation-an achievement I believe should make credit unions proud and confident for their future."

CULAC will report its fund raising and contribution record when it files its next report later this week.
