SILVER SPRING, Md. – As economic concerns soar, the National Foundation for Credit Counseling reports that consumers have been reaching out for help in record numbers.

The number of calls to the NFCC National Locator Line, a service that automatically connects consumers with the NFCC Member Agency closest to them, sets new records each week. In October, calls to the NLL were up 70% over the same month of 2007.

Year-to-date visits to NFCC Web sites through Oct. 31, 2008 are up by nearly 30% over the same period in 2007, representing an increase of 494,786 visitors for the 10-month period.

In addition, consumers taking the NFCC Mortgage Reality Check, a self-assessment test that determines one's risk of foreclosure at www.HousingHelpNow.org, are up by 33% year-to-date, with those at imminent risk of foreclosure going up to 85%. The most recent data also shows requests for housing counseling is up by 63% year over year.
