PHOENIX — Arizona State Credit Union is claiming an advertising coup by buying the only local ad to appear in The Arizona Republic's historic souvenir edition proclaiming the election of Barack Obama.

The $1.1 billion Arizona State bought the back page ad promoting a 4% money market CD rate months ago in The Arizona Republic as part of an overall package deal, but now "we know that our ad is being saved in a special place in over 500,000 homes in Arizona and giving special exposure to our industry," said Paul B. Stull, senior vice president-marketing.

Stull said he was informed by Arizona Republic ad reps late Tuesday that the newspapers "are 100% sold out and dealers are looking for more copies but the cupboard is bare." Arizona State is gratified that it was able to get "full coverage for the credit union and at the time special awareness for the industry," said Stull.

"We decided to place the singular ad because no matter which candidate won, it would be a souvenir of a historic event," said Stull. "McCain would have been the first president from Arizona and, of course, Obama being the first black president. The opportunity presented itself and it was a great marketing decision no matter how you look at it."
