KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The $358 million Mazuma Credit Union is finding it “slow going” so far in trying to reach the youth market with a post-your-own-video promotion.

The unusual campaign and contest, called “What Are You About?” started in September, has brought in nine videos from young viewers who clicked in to a special Web site.

“We thought we might get a few more entries by now but at the same time we think it is important credit unions try with innovative ways to attract more young people,” said Robert Givens, president/CEO, expressing frustration at the difficulties CUs have in appealing to the youth market with YouTube and Facebook techniques.

The contest in which winning videos will be awarded special “audio/video” packages as prizes is slated to end Nov. 30 though the Web site and the campaign will continue. Video winners are to be announced Dec. 8 with the first place prize worth $9,000, said Mazuma.

Mazuma explained that the “What Are You About?” video sharing campaign is “geared toward Kansas City youth with a site that provides a place” where young people “can speak their minds and share a piece of themselves with the rest of the community.”

“The site is meant to open up discussion within Kansas City” said Givens adding the Kansas City CU in trying to reach Gen Y seeks “to hear their stories and see how we can help, to hopefully affect the financial outcome of tomorrow's America.”
