NEW YORK — Even in the face of declining economy, credit unions should not miss potential card issuing opportunities, according to industry experts.
The New York Times published an article today documenting the increasing reluctance among mainstream and bank card issuers to issue credit cards as freely or as competitively as they have in the past.
The story reported that the number of direct mail card offers this year will fall to its lowest number since 2004, 8.4 million pieces, and that the average U.S. household will see 13 fewer direct mail card offers per year because of it.
In addition, issuers are tightening up on credit lines, closing inactive accounts and raising interest rates on even cardholders with good credit histories, all leading to opportunities for prudent credit union card issuing, card industry experts have said.
