AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Sunset Advisory Commission Tuesday extended renewed support for state-chartered credit unions in its campaign to protect dual chartering and possible consolidation of state and federal agencies.
"With all the financial upheaval today on Wall Street and in Washington, it is important that Texas state chartered continue to operate under a structure that has proven successful,"" said a spokeswoman for the Texas Credit Union League.
At a commission hearing, Richard Ensweiler, president/CEO of the league in testifying on a staff report said CUs are heartened that the commission members "agreed that the Texas Credit Union Department should continue operating for another 12 years.

In picking up on other issues, the commission, he said, has continued policies on "consolidated filing of the IRS form 990s and the addition of monetary fines to the powers of the commissioner."
The commission is slated to hold one more set of hearings Dec. 16-17 before presenting final recommendations to the Texas Legislature for its 2009 session.
