FARMERS BRANCH, Texas — The Texas Credit Union Foundation online appeal for donations to help credit union victims of Hurricane Ike posted large gains Friday, topping $100,000.
The latest donations, underscoring a stepped up industry campaign described as urgent in light of the Texas Coast disaster, are being directed at the neediest CU employees who have already started receiving checks.
"Our foundation received 50 more grant applications on our desks this morning, and so far we've given out 140 individual grants, totaling $66,047," said a foundation spokeswoman, noting the funds are going out "as quickly as these dollars are coming in."

The individual contributions routed all week through the National Credit Union Administration's CUAid, the Texas Foundation and other vehicles come from big and small CUs across the state, out-of-state leagues, as well as vendors and other trade groups.
"We are proud to be part of this caring and supportive credit union community, and we hope and pray for a quick recovery for everyone affected," said John Cassidy president/CEO of Southwest Corporate Federal CU, which contributed $25,000.
The help Ike victims campaign follows an emotional and widely disseminated e-mailed appeal from Richard Ensweiler, president/CEO of the Texas Credit Union League, who wrote these CU employees displaced from their homes and who "have lost everything" had put their own personal hardships aside "so that they can be there for their members, who themselves have suffered great losses. Now it's our turn–we must be there for them in this time of great need."
