BATON ROUGE, La. — Though power outages and phone communication problems were still plaguing parts of the state, Louisiana credit unions Monday were returning to normal business operations.

The Louisiana Credit Union League reported that "99% of the state's credit unions are now providing needed cash to members through ATMs and shared branches.

"There are a small number of credit unions operating from alternate locations and we are working to finalize that number currently," said a league spokesman.

Anne Cochran, president/CEO of the league, said CUs "have been able to put the lessons of the hurricanes of 2005 to work in 2008."

Moreover, she said, "Cooperative branching continued to prove its value to Louisiana credit unions and their members throughout the aftermath of Hurricane Gustav."

"While credit unions and tens of thousands of Louisiana residents were working to return home, they were able to utilize the features of cooperative branching to manage their finances," she said. "As each day passes, more CUs are opening and welcoming their members back to their hometowns."

Out of more than 280 credit unions in the state, 13 were not operating as of this afternoon.
