DENVER — People who helped with the building of a home for a disabled veteran from the Iraqi war were honored with a reception hosted by CUNA last night during the Democratic National Convention here.
CUNA organized the event, at which SSG Travis Strong and his family were presented with a certificate of occupancy for their new home in the Denver suburb of Golden.
CUNA, working with the Credit Union Association of Colorado and Wyoming, the National Journal,, Homes for Our Troops and the Democratic National Convention Committee, built a home for Strong and his family. The effort included raising money, recruiting volunteers to help with construction, and finding companies to furnish the home.

"This home is a testament to the principles that the American people believe in," said John Gonsalves, founder and president of Homes for Our Troops. "Regardless of what people think of the war, this is about supporting our men and women who made sacrifices for us."
The reception, which featured a buffet that included carved roast beef and chocolate-covered strawberries for dessert, is a prelude to Wednesday's event at which the Strongs will receive the keys to their new home. They are scheduled to move in Saturday.
