DENVER — Democrats need to offer voters an agenda for improving their economic situation, but not come across as being anti-wealthy.

That's the analysis two Democrats from different wings of the party gave at a symposium sponsored by CUNA today.

"Voters know the economy is not working. They want to climb the aspirational ladder but not knock people off the top rungs. Members of the working class don't see themselves as members of the oppressed," said Will Marshall, President of the Progressive Policy Institute, a centrist think tank in Washington, D.C.

Andy Stern, President of the Service Employees International Union said his members do want to get ahead, but they fear that there's a lack of opportunity to do so.

"People believe that many of those who have gotten to the top have pulled up the ladder," he said. "Polls show that 80% of people don't think their children or grandchildren will do better than they have."

CUNA is one of the co-sponsors of daily forums on current politics being hosted by the National Journal during the Democratic Convention.
