Georgia Federal Credit Union, Duluth, Ga., announced the recipient of the first annual Archbishop Emeritus John Francis Donoghue scholarship competition. The scholarship is given in honor of archbishop emeritus of the Archdiocese of Atlanta, the Most Reverend Archbishop John F. Donoghue. A $2,500 scholarship is awarded in his name to one outstanding Catholic high school senior residing in the 69 counties that make up the Archdiocese of Atlanta. The recipient is selected based on individual essay, academic achievement and community involvement. This years recipient was Monica Hogan, who attends Blessed Trinity High School. Hogan has been accepted to Duke University and will major in biomedical engineering.
USA One Credit Union, Matteson, Ill., made a $500 donation to the Dollars for Scholars program. The program raises funds in the immediate community to help graduates from local high schools pursue higher education. USA One joined with several other local businesses to contribute funds and pledge their long-term support. Employees also volunteered to encourage participation by more local businesses and to serve as review panelists to streamline the distribution of funds. The scholarship was given to Sherry Gunn, who graduated from Rich Central High School and will be attending Eastern Illinois University in the fall. Last year, Dollars for Scholars awarded $29 million nationwide to high school graduates planning to attend college or trade or technical school.
Boulder Valley Credit Union, Boulder, Colo., announced the recipients of its scholarship award for the 2008-2009 academic year. Mary Lanaghen was the $1,500 scholarship recipient and Zachary Luna and Christina Buehler each received $1,00 scholarships. They were selected based on academic achievement, participation in extracurricular activities, their passion for continuing education and their commitment to community involvement. Lanaghen plans to attend Colorado University Boulder to study finance and accounting. Luna plans to attend Colorado College to study marketing and visual arts. Buehler plans to attend Colorado State to study radiology.
Gulf Winds Federal Credit Union, Pensacola, Fla., announced the winners of the 2008 Gulf Winds scholarship program. The scholarship is a $2,500 award named after pioneer members for their dedicated service to the credit union and its members. The award is granted to four credit union members that are high school graduates and beginning their first-year of undergraduate education. Gulf Winds funded the 2008 Lola Stephens Scholarship through a partnership with GEICO Insurance. The four recipients were Eleni Weisnicht, Brooks MacBeth, Ariel Westmark and Travis Hornsby. Weisnicht was the Rufus Caton Scholarship recipient and plans to attend the University of Colorado to study bio-medical engineering. MacBeth is the Louis Lambert Scholarship recipient and plans to attend Birmingham Southern College to pursue pre-medical studies. Westmark was the GEICO Lola Stephens Scholarship recipient and plans to attend Mississippi State University to study architecture. Hornsby is the Al Evans Jr. Scholarship recipients and plans to attend the University of Florida to study finance and political science.
Atlanta Postal Credit Union, Atlanta, announced the winners of its annual APCU Youth Member Development Scholarship. The scholarship review panel judges awarded three $1,000 scholarships to young members. The winners were Andrea Stadelman, Autumn Richards, Charles Long and Keith Johnson. Stadelman plans to attend Ohio State University and major in health sciences and occupational therapy. Richards plans to attend Monroe County Community College and major in nursing. Long plans to attend U.S. West Point Academy to study and train to be in the U.S. Air Force. Johnson plans to attend Oklahoma State University and major in energy management.
Members Advantage Credit Union, Michigan City, Ind., awarded its 2008 Members Advantage Credit Union Leona Bruno Scholarship to Robert Braddy. Braddy is a graduating senior of Michigan City High School and plans to attend Purdue University North Central to study business administration. Braddy received the scholarship based on his scholastic excellence, personal integrity, active participations in and service to the school as well as his contributions to the community. During high school, Braddy was a varsity member of both men's cross country and the track and field teams. He was the teams most valuable player for three years and made the all conference team for three years. He was also a state individual qualifier his senior and was active in concert band, symphonic band, pep band and Japanese Club.
City-County Federal Credit Union, Brooklyn Center, Minn., announced its 2008 scholarship winners. The credit union awarded three $1,000 scholarships. The recipients were Franklin Okose, Allison LaGrange and David Booth. The recipients were chosen based on their essay submission topic on: What is instant gratifications and what does it mean to you.
