Langley Federal Credit Union, Newport News, Va., presented four members with the Galaxy Graduate $5,000 College Scholarship award. The four recipients were Alex Chen, Sydney Giblin, Benno Lee and Angela Zhang. Chen attended York High School and has been accepted to Stanford University where he will major in mathematics and physics. Giblin attended Jamestown High School and was ranked No. 1 in her class of 356. She will attend MIT to study aerospace and mechanical engineering. Lee attended York High School and New Horizon's Governor's School and plans to study electrical engineering and computer science. Zhang attended York High School and strives to work with the UN Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission studying tsunamis in order to minimize their effects.

Neighbors Credit Union, St. Louis, announced the 17th annual Clarence L. Hagemann Scholarship Contest winners. Neighbors awarded a total of $4,800 this year and has awarded a total of $31,100 over the past 17 years. The four scholarship winners were awarded $1,200 each. The recipients were Kacy Carr, Emily Martin, Kaitlan Prugger and Katherine Valli. Carr, Martin and Valli will attend Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo., in the fall and Prugger will attend the University of Missouri-Columbia. The scholarship was open to all My.Bux members. My.Bux is for all Neighbor's members between the ages of 13 and 19. Each participant had to submit and essay entry on: If you were given the opportunity to spend an evening with any person, living, deceased or fictional, whom would you choose and why.

Hanscom Federal Credit Union, Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass., gave out $9,000 in scholarships. The Condon Scholarships are awarded annually in honor of former board member John Condon. Recipients are chosen based on academic record, extracurricular activities and an essay. Five of the $1,500 awards went to members who will enter college in the fall. Those winners were Elizabeth Albany, Sarah Elizabeth Dargon, Kerry Lynch, Alison Reichard and Carmen Torres. Hanscom also gave out $1,500 to a student from the Lowell High' Junior ROTC program, cadet Natalia Guisao, who plans to attend River College to study pre-law and criminal justice.

Unity One Federal Credit Union, Forth Worth, Texas, named Catherine Shook the 2008-2009 Bob Bennett Memorial Scholarship recipient. Shook will receive $1,000 to aid in her college expenses. She graduated from Central High School where she was the swim team captain and a member of the National Honor Society, a Distinguished Achievement and Texas Scholar and Keller ISD art show award winner. Shook plans to attend Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, and will major in restaurant, hotel and institutional management. To qualify for the scholarship the recipient must be a graduating senior accepted or attending an accredited two-year or four-year college or vocational-technical school, maintain a 2.8 grade point average and be a member of Unity One. Scoring is based on a complete application and an essay addressing if there is a need for required financial education courses in high school or college or as a credit union member, what would you tell a fellow student about how credit unions are different than banks and why they should join one? Shook wrote her essay on why there is a need for financial education courses.

Founders Federal Credit Union, Lancaster, S.C., named four recipients of its 2008 Laura M. Fleming Scholarship Award. The four recipients were chosen from over 40 applicants and were: Weslie Clark, Caroline Allen, Shannalee VanBeek and Angela Hendrix. Each recipient will receive $1,000 per year to attend the college or university of their choice. The Laura M. Fleming Scholarship Fund was established by Founders FCU in memory of its former president/CEO.

AtlasOne Federal Credit Union, Boron, Calif., gave a $400 check to Sharon Burgess of Boron High School as part of the BHS book scholarship. The scholarship was started in 1989 by a former BHS teacher in an effort to help supplement the rising costs of books for those pursuing a higher education. All of the funds received by the school, donated by local businesses and organizations, were divided between all of the graduating class who go on to get a higher education. The amount given depends on the amount of donations, whether a student is full or part time and the number of graduates furthering their education.

Retail Employees Credit Union, Atlanta, hosted its first James K. Adams Financial Literacy Seminar and Scholarship. A total of 20 participants attended the event. The two-hour basic financial planning class was presented by Retail Employee's President Jeanne Kucey and covered topics such as interest rates, loan calculations, savings, 401k plans and the importance of maintaining good credit. Member Keisha Grier was awarded the $1,000 scholarship. Macy's also donated two $50 gift certificates which were awarded to attendees Cristyn Johnson and Michael Robinson. All participants received a basic financial planning workbook and refreshments.
