SAN JOSE, Calif. — Meriwest Credit Union has elected Stan Chapman, Karl Nigg and Charles Munch to three-year terms on the board of directors.

In addition, Ramsey Melugin was elected to the board for a one-year term. In an additional action by the board, Phil Fluegemann was appointed to serve on the supervisory committee.

Nigg and Chapman were both board members, serving 39 years and 41 years, respectively. The newcomers to the board are Melugin, a retired official at NASA Ames Research Center, and Munch, the new vice chairman, who is a retired career officer in the U.S. Navy and former executive officer of the Moffett Field Naval Air Station. Munch was a business area manager for information technologies at Northrop Grumman Corp. for 20 years after leaving the service. Both Melugin and Munch served on the board of Golden Bay Credit Union for many years.

Mazur Is Indiana CUL Treasurer

INDIANAPOLIS — Chiphone Federal Credit Union CEO Ron Mazur was elected board treasurer of the Indiana Credit Union League.

Mazur has been a member of the league board, representing credit unions in northern Indiana's District 1, since 2006. He has been the CEO at Chiphone FCU for more than 25 years and currently is a member of several league committees, including serving as chairman of the audit-finance and league-servicecorp products and services committees.

He is a member of the convention and credentials and rules committees. Additionally, he is the board treasurer for Credit Union Centers of Indiana, which is responsible for the management of Indiana's shared branching activities.

New FCUL Board Chairman Named

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — GTE Federal Credit Union Executive Vice President/Chief Financial Officer Rich Helber has been elected the new chairman of the Florida Credit Union League's board of directors.

Helber succeeds John Hirabayashi, president/CEO of Community First CU of Florida.

He has served in his position at GTE FCU since January 2000, where he is responsible for the credit union's strategic planning, charitable foundation, property and casualty insurance agency, financial planning services and financial operations. In addition to FCUL chairman of the board, Helber is also chairman of the Florida Credit Union Foundation and serves on the National Credit Union Foundation finance and audit committees.

Helber's involvement in the credit union movement spans almost 30 years with his positions as president/CEO of Central Corporate Credit Union and vice president of financial operations and services of U.S. Central Credit Union in Kansas City.

Other FCUL board executive officers elected include Mary O. Wood, president/CEO of Florida West Coast Credit Union, chairman-elect; Brent E. Lister, president/CEO of First Florida Credit Union, treasurer; Tom Randle, CEO of Sarasota Coastal Credit Union, secretary; and Anice Prosser, senior vice president human resources of Envision Credit Union, executive officer-at-large.

Aspling Joins Travis CU Board

VACAVILLE, Calif. — Travis Credit Union has appointed Deborah L. Aspling, a health care executive with more than 17 years of executive leadership experience to its board. She will serve on the compensation and policy committees.

Aspling currently holds the position of chief operating officer at Kaiser Permanente Hospital, Roseville and Sacramento, where she manages 11,000 employees with an annual operating budget of more than $1 billion. Additionally, she has extensive operational experience with profit and not-for-profit organizations.

"Deborah brings more than a decade of experience with one of the largest medical facilities in the region to the Travis Credit Union board of directors. Her experience, which includes executive leadership, technology and finance, complement our board well. We are very pleased to be working with her," said Curt Newland, Travis Credit Union board chairman.

In addition to her responsibilities at Kaiser Permanente, Aspling has additional professional responsibilities as a colonel in the United States Air Force. She serves as the commander of the 349th Aeromedical Evacuation Unit at Travis Air Force Base.

She has been published numerous times in Aspen and Nursing Economics, and has served as a national consultant on clinical effectiveness, strategic planning, operational compliance, leadership development and risk reduction strategies.

"As a longtime member, I was impressed with the significant financial impact Travis Credit Union has in the lives of its members. The credit union is a financial leader and views itself as a stakeholder in the communities it serves," said Aspling. "As a volunteer director, I look forward to working with the credit union, in an advisory capacity, to represent the interests of all its members."

Aspling holds a master's degree in business administration and bachelor's degree in nursing science from California State University. She performed post-graduate studies in nursing management at the University of California in Davis and completed a fellowship grant in nursing administration from the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania.

"Deborah will be a tremendous asset to the board with impressive business acumen and understanding of organizational issues," said Patsy Van Ouwerkerk, president /CEO of Travis CU.

NACUSAC Celebrates Graduates

DEL MAR, Calif. — The second graduating class of the National Association of Credit Union Supervisory and Auditing Committees was recently honored with a luncheon.

The recent graduates include Joseph Guagliardo, Municipal Credit Union; Donald Harris, Fidelity Federal Credit Union; Christine Perritt, Northwest Federal Credit Union; and Jeff Thomas, Fidelity Federal Credit Union.

NACUSAC Director Cecil Short passed out the diplomas and commended the volunteers for their commitment to continuing education.

"Today we recognize four NACUSAC members who have demonstrated dedication to gain the knowledge necessary to excel in their oversight responsibilities at their respective credit unions," said Short.

NACUSAC is the only national trade association serving credit union supervisory and auditing committees exclusively. Its mission is to provide leadership, support and education to enhance the capability of credit union supervisory and auditing committee members to fulfill their responsibilities.

Board Results In at XCEL FCU

SECAUCUS, N.J. — XCEL Federal Credit Union has announced the re-election of three members to its board as well as the appointment of two new members to its supervisory committee.

Leading the way was Chairman of the Board Daniel H. Moffit, who was elected to the position after being appointed to the board in December 2007. Moffit, who is retired after a 36-year career with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, brings extensive management experience and an MBA from Fordham University to his position.

Also re-elected to the board was Gennaro Aprile, a retired Port Authority police officer who is experienced in contract negotiations and employee relations and has served on the XCEL board for over 17 years. Stacey Walker, a board member since 2005, was re-elected for a second term. An attorney, Walker has been a credit union member since 1995, and is the recipient of the NAFCU 2008 cornerstone award and a World Council of Credit Unions Young Credit Union People 2007 award winner.

"Our board directors–and all our member volunteers–are the source of our strength and ongoing success," said XCEL FCU CEO Linda McFadden. "For more than 40 years, we've been growing for our members–because of our members."

Volunteer members Phyllis H. Ford and Matthew Sirlin also recently joined the XCEL supervisory committee. Ford is a public trust officer with the New York REO task force of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and has been an XCEL member since 2000. Sirlin, who recently completed his MBA at the University of Massachusetts, previously worked in XCEL customer service while completing his education.
