LOS ALAMOS, N.M.– Press coverage of the ongoing governance controversy at New Mexico's second largest state chartered credit union has drawn the CU's ire down on one of its supervisory committee members.
Chuck Monta??o is the director of Fraud and Special Audits for New Mexico's Office of State Auditor as well as a Supervisory Committee member of the $314 million Del Norte Credit Union. At least, he thinks he is. Monta??o maintained that, so far, he has not been informed that he was no longer a member of the Supervisory Committee.
In the midst of committee elections, Del Norte's board decided the Supervisory Committee would no longer be elected but appointed and had not validated the balloting from the most recent contest, he said. Monta??o and others have objected to the change and maintained it requires more input from the CU's members.

Instead, Del Norte legal counsel sent Monta??o a letter on June 10 threatening him with legal action and demanding that he stop talking with reporters about the controversy.
"Please be advised that the Credit Union will take such steps as are necessary to protect the confidential information you possess concerning credit union affairs and information which you obtained during your tenure as a committee member," the CU wrote. "We hereby demand that you immediately cease and desist divulging any such information to others, including reporters."
