CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — All in a day's work, the $6 million Quaker Oats Credit Union, located on high ground and with four employees, "is really hopping today" with 13 staffers in its facility, nine of whom are from the flood-damaged Metco CU.
"And tonight the Quaker Oats board will have its regular meeting in the board room of Collins," said Heather Lemke, Quaker loan officer detailing the make-shift relocations caused by the floods as Quaker directors giving up their meeting room to Metco convene at Collins Community CU, the city's largest.
The $19 million Metco, located on the now receding Cedar River, closed its office last week setting up operations and using call center staffers in Quaker offices. Like many other Iowa CUs in flood zones, CUs have used their Web sites to direct members to other CU offices while service is restored amidst continued power and phone outages.

"We appreciate your understanding during this devastating disaster and will keep you posted," said the Metco message to its members.
"For the moment, this is all about credit unions helping other credit unions," said Lemke.
Richard Benhart, president/CEO of Collins, said conditions are improving in his city adding though that "we have still have eight to 10 of our employees who are really hurting but the way so many people have pitched in to help is truly heartwarming."
