COLUMBUS, Ind. — With 14 of its own employees losing homes, cars or other property, the $780 million Centra CU began mobilizing both an internal and community relief effort Thursday to assist victims of this week's flooding that hit this central Innodiana community of 40,000, closing down a regional hospital.

“We have a three-pronged effort underway–to help our employees, join the Red Cross and other agencies in collecting food, cleaning supplies etc. and to help the many members that were impacted,” said Nan Morrow, vice president of corporate development.

As part of its aid package, the CU is offering immediate $1,000 Flood Relief cash assistance loans deferring payment for six months, said Morrow. Meanwhile, Centra is “working together with individual employees to help with their needs.” Centra, with 115,000 members, has 225 employees.

“This was a 100-year flood,” said Morrow noting however, that Centra branches and other facilities were spared damage. The White River, which flooded a vast residential area starting Saturday, has now receded, officials said.
