ALBURQUEQUE, N.M. — The credit union industry is mourning formerU.S. New Mexico Federal Credit Union President/CEO JohnThompson.

With a focus on service to the credit union membership, Thompsonlead the credit union from 1979 to 2000.

Under his leadership, USNMFCU grew from 15 to 130 employees,from one to four branches, and from offering three types of loansand one savings account to a full array of financial products andservices. Membership increased from 9,400 to 35,000 members, andassets grew from $15 million to over $261 million representing anincrease of over 1,740%.

Thompson also played a major role in the credit union community,serving as a board director for NAFCU, CUNA and SouthwestCorporate. He was also president of the New Mexico Credit UnionLeague. He was eager to support credit unions philanthropic effortsof giving back to the community. These efforts earned U.S. NewMexico the state's first NMCUL Dora Maxwell Award.

In 2006 Thompson received the Credit Union Association of NewMexico Ron Moore Hall of Fame Award, which recognizes a lifetimecontribution to the credit union movement.
