Community One Federal Credit Union, Las Vegas, concluded its annual United Way of Southern Nevada campaign by donating over $5,600. Employees could make donations during the campaign through payroll deductions or by participating in events over the two-week fundraising period. Employees purchased eBingo cards to participate in online bingo throughout the workday where numbers were called via email. Other fundraising activities included a bake sale, used-book sale, and an on-property barbeque with delivery service to the six other locations across the valley. A raffle was held with prizes donated by local businesses to close the campaign. To help raise additional funds, Community One donated an all-weekend package to the NASCAR Spring Cup Series held in Las Vegas.

Langley Federal Credit Union, Newport News, Va., provided a grant to teacher Eleanor Joy Barclay to open Yates Elementary School’s student-run bookstore called Starbooks. The grant was used to teach students the components of a retail store operation such as management, inventory control, accounting, cash handling, advertising and sales promotion, and security. Third through fifth grade students were allowed to apply for positions in the bookstore and had to complete a job application and interview. Each year, Langley awards twenty grants of $250 each for local schools to teach financial literacy in the classroom.
