WASHINGTON — A federal panel making recommendations on ways to improve the public's knowledge of personal finance will receive input from several people who are quite familiar with the work of credit unions.
Four people with past or present associations with credit unions were named by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson to positions on the President's Advisory Council on Financial Literacy.
Ted Beck, president/CEO of the National Endowment for Financial Education, will chair the council's outreach committee. The endowment, which funds an array of educational programs, receives contributions from CUNA and several individual credit unions.
John Bryant, president of Operation Hope, a nonprofit social investment banking organization that works with many credit unions to provide economic opportunities and education in low-income areas, will chair the council's committee on underserved populations.
Cutler Dawson, president/CEO of the Navy Federal Credit Union, will be the council's liaison to the Financial Literacy and Education Commission, which comprises 20 federal agencies, led by the Treasury Department.
Laura Levine, the executive director of the Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy and a past vice president of the California Credit Union League and of the Vista Federal Credit Union, will chair the committee on financial education for youth.
The President's Commission on Financial Literacy is coming up with proposed publc- and private-sector initiatives to raise people's knowledge of personal finance issues.
