BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Calling himself a "lucky pioneer in the credit union movement" with a long record of service to state leagues and CUNA, Gary B. Wolter is retiring in mid-2009 as president/CEO of the Alabama Credit Union League.

"Look this is hard for me and it is emotional," declared Wolter, who has served at the league helm for 42 years, racking up a longevity mark among trade group managers in the industry.

Often described as one of the industry's most dedicated and passionate servants, Wolter said he will step down in 14 months giving the trade group plenty of advance notice so "it will not be rushed in defining the process of finding a successor," said the league.

Wolter, 68, said he has been contemplating stepping down for months "but there was never the right time" but he decided he finally needed to let younger talent take over the league, which he joined in 1962 as a field rep, promoted four years later to CEO.

The Alabama League manager has served in countless leadership jobs in CUNA and is credited with creating U.S. Central and has been involved in a host of strategic CU events including the start of share drafts. He has served on CUNA's Renewal, Renaissance panels and formed the Credit Union Roundtable.

"While my passion and enthusiasm for the credit union movement is as strong as ever, I feel the time is right for me to step away and spend time doing things my wife, Jean, and I have planned for some time," said Wolter.
