BOULDER, Colo. — Evelyn Polando, chief operating officer of the $800 million Elevations Credit Union, has been named interim CEO succeeding the late William Sterner, the CU president, who died March 31.

Polando with 38 years of industry experience joined Elevations as vice president of operations in 1999 and was named COO two years later. Prior to that time, Polando was vice president of installation at Summit Information Systems, a Fiserv unit.

In a statement, Elevations said Polando was selected as the temporary CEO by the CU board April 3 with a search underway for a permanent successor.

"Evelyn has worked closely with the board for many years, and I have complete confidence in her leadership abilities and understanding of credit union operations," said Lynn Walloch, Elevations chairman.

Polando replaces Sterner who had been CEO since 2000 and chairman of the Colorado Credit Union Association. He joined the Boulder CU in 1997. Sterner, 66, had previously been identified with leadership in various trade groups including CUNA, the California and Kansas CU leagues, and the World Council of Credit Unions.

Sterner died four days after suffering a heart attack while attending a CUAC Legislative Capital Forum in Denver.
