INDIANAPOLIS — Credit unions in Indiana and abroad may be bracing for the aftermath of ATA Airlines, which shut down today leaving passengers stranded and more than 2,200 employees without jobs.
The carrier filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection yesterday but was forced to cease operations after an unexpected cancellation of a key contract for ATA's military charter business, which made it possible for the airline to obtain additional capital to sustain its operations or restructure the business, ATA Airlines said in a statement.
At the time of the shutdown, ATA had approximately 2,230 employees, including approximately 600 pilots, more than 800 flight attendants, and more than 100 mechanics, according to the carrier. ATA had approximately 585 employees at its headquarters in Indianapolis.
