LOS ANGELES — An explosion yesterday afternoon ripped apart a branch belonging to $492 million Water and Power Community Credit Union, killing a firefighter and injuring another, according to the Los Angeles Times. The paper reported only one additional minor injury.
Fire officials are speculating that the blast was caused by an electrical malfunction. However, David Nahai, general manager of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, told the Times that no power outages were reported in the area, and said of the cause, "It's a mystery." FBI agents and police bomb squad officers combed the blast scene yesterday afternoon, but have not reported anything suspicious.
The Times reported that electrical systems in the area were being moved because of construction along busy Sepulveda Boulevard, where the branch is located, and may have contributed to the blast.
A call to the credit union for official comment has not yet been returned.
