INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — Over 160 members enjoyed food, prizes and information at the United Consumers Credit Union annual membership meeting.
Among the attendees was Charlie Braden, one of the founding UCCU members, who served as secretary/treasurer for more than three decades.
"I ran the annual meeting for the first 32 years," said Braden. "But it was a much smaller crowd back then."

United Consumers was originally chartered in 1941 to serve area steelworkers working for Sheffield Steel, later Armco Steel. The steel factory closed in the early 1990s. The credit union diversified its field of membership, and now serves those who live or work in Jackson County, Buchanan County and the city of Cameron, as well as other select employee groups.
"It's not often that you get the privilege of meeting someone who is responsible for creating your credit union," said UCCU President/CEO Chris McCreary. "Generations of members who have benefited from membership at the credit union can thank Mr. Braden and his fellow credit union pioneers for their vision, determination and commitment."
