VACAVILLE, Calif. — Travis Credit Union has recently sponsored the 2008 Cal Grant presentation for Solano and Napa County High Schools.

Area high school students and faculty were welcomed by Patsy Van Ouwerkerk, president and CEO of Travis Credit Union, who reminded the students that financial resources are available to those who desire to attend college.

"Travis Credit Union saw sponsoring and recording this event as part of its commitment to education in our community," said Van Ouwerkerk. "The rising fees of California's state colleges and universities have prevented many students from attending or finishing college, and we believe the Cal Grant is their answer. That's why it's so important for us to help get the information out to students."

The presentation, the second that Travis Credit Union has sponsored in Solano County, drew hundreds of students, local dignitaries and school officials. Van Ouwerkerk introduced Wil Cason, the keynote speaker, who specializes in mentoring programs and working with at risk youth.

Cal Grants are free money for eligible students. An alternative to loans, grants are available to college-bound high school seniors and students who are transferring to a four-year school from a community college. Eligible students may receive up to $8,300 in Cal Grants, and this money does not have to be repaid.

Ensuring that all students have access to the Cal Grant information, Travis Credit Union previously recorded the presentation and is sending DVDs to every Solano and Napa County high school, continuation and alternative education schools. The DVDs will be available to all high school students through their scholarship counselors or administrators.

"If future workers are to succeed in a global economy, they need the skills and tools that a college education provides," said Van Ouwerkerk. "Cal Grants can be the key to a brighter, more lucrative future."
