WASHINGTON — When the House Financial Services Committee meets for a Feb. 13 hearing to review 30 years of the Community Reinvestment Act, the members will hear from two sometime critics of the act's lack of coverage for credit unions.
According to the witness list for the hearing, John Taylor, CEO of the National Community Reinvestment Coalition and Marva Williams, Senior Program Officer, Chicago Local Initiatives Support Corporation will speak on the topic.
The NCRC has been a long-time advocate for extending CRA to cover credit unions and has released at least two reports seeking to make that case under Taylor's leadership.
Most recently Williams worked for the Woodstock Institute, a research organization which also issued reports critical of so-called mainstream credit union efforts to serve lower income members and communities, though it remained a strong advocate for community development and low-income credit unions.
Williams is still listed as senior vice president with Woodstock but the office said she no longer worked for the group. She was not available to comment on her testimony as of this posting.
