WESTBROOK, Maine — Helping credit unions grow their membership will be a top priority for the Maine Credit Union League this year.

The league's Membership Growth Committee, which includes credit union operations, lending, marketing and management representatives, met for the first time this past fall and has started to schedule meetings for 2008. The committee is also focusing on the importance of having training and programming to help credit union managers and staff better serve current members while attracting new members.

So far, several growth initiatives have taken form including learning more about Generation Y and their perceptions of credit unions, forming financial literacy and human resource councils to provide discussion forums, networking and training.

The league has also developed a logo that will help to brand the issue of membership growth and draw attention to initiatives, products and services that are part of this initiative.

John Murphy, president of the Maine Credit Union League, said it is "crucial that credit unions work together to strengthen their position in the marketplace by identifying and driving member value."
