DALLAS — One of the bastions of old-school money transfer is now hoping to ride the leading edge of the new.

Brink's Inc. of armored truck fame says it now is processing more than 1 million items per month with its check-imaging service, begun about eight months ago on a Metavante platform.

The Dallas-based company combines cash and Web-based processing and logistics along with armored transportation and electronic presentment using its network of more than 100 cash vaults around the country.

"Our end-to-end solution enables fully integrated cash and check processing virtually anywhere in the nation — all from one of the most trusted names in the business. This is the 'total package' many financial institutions have been waiting for," says Fred Purches, Brink's senior vice president of strategic solutions and product development.

The cash-in tickets and paper checks are truncated as they are image-captured at Brink's vaults, then the check deposits are balanced, adjusted, and forwarded to the Metavante Sendpoint service where the check images are formatted as custom X9.37 files for posting or bank-to-bank image exchange.

Brink's check imaging services are in operation at several of the nation's top 10 banks, and the company is in discussions with several others.

"We are on track to service at least six to 10 of the top 25 banks within the next 12 months," Purches says.
