ARLINGTON, VA — NASCUS' study of how state chartered credit unions are serving their members used a carefully drawn up representative sample of state chartered credit unions in order to be able to show the most accurate data. But on at least the topic of shared branching participation, the sample does not appear to have been representative of state chartered credit unions.

According to the NASCUS study, which had been requested by Rep. Bill Thomas (R-Calif.) then Chairman of the House Ways and Committee, 61.51% of state chartered credit unions surveyed participate in shared branching. But CO-OP Shared Branching, one of the two nationwide shared branching networks in the country, reports only 706 of 3,263 state chartered credit unions nationwide, or about 22%, participate in shared branching.

NASCUS was unable to account for the discrepancy but stood by the sample, saying that both it and the data are sound.
