DULUTH, Ga. — Credit unions in Georgia, the birthplace of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., have donated more than $66,000 to help build a national memorial to honor the civil rights leader's legacy.
As of Nov. 29, 24 credit unions in Georgia have contributed more than $56,000, including a $10,000 contribution from the Georgia Credit Union League Service Corporation, according to Georgia Credit Union Affiliates.
"Georgia credit unions know firsthand the impact that Dr. King has made on our state and our country," said Michael Mercer, president/CEO of GCUA. "Our participation in this effort is our way of demonstrating support for this incredible project that will impact generations to come."

The Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation (www.mlkmemorial.org) is currently raising $100 million towards the building of the memorial and center that will feature King's life and accomplishments. To date, the foundation has raised more than $84 million. The memorial is scheduled to be completed in 2009.
Hubert Hoosman, president/CEO of Vantage CU and treasurer of the African-American Credit Union Coalition, which has spearheaded fundraising efforts for the King memorial, said "the national credit union movement has stepped up to the plate again to show differentiation between credit unions and other financial institutions."
