YUMA, Ariz. — The outpouring of sympathy for victims of last October's San Diego wildfires was heartfelt among employees of AEA Federal Credit Union, which explains the success of an $11,500 fund-raiser at the Arizona CU over the holidays.
"We did the same for Katrina victims and so it was only natural we wanted to help out fellow credit union employees and members," explained Denise McGregor, AEA FCU executive vice president.
To get the ball rolling, AEA's President/CEO Ken Bredemeyer challenged each CU department to raise $1,000 or more "and I will cook a tri-tip beef lunch for you."

Sure enough, Bredemeyer began his grilling duties early last month as employees were encouraged to "Flip Flop for California" buying donated foodstuffs and allowing to dress in comfortable beach attire, flip flops. Burritos, baked goods, and gumbo were sold to staff and members while some employees signed up to get a pie in the face from fellow staff and CU members.
Discussing the geographic and personal affinity with nearby California, McGregor noted that many AEA activities such as training and information sharing occur in southern California and "there are many friendships that have developed with California trade associations."
In addition, many Yuma residents and employees of AEA FCU have used the areas hit by the fires for vacation homes and recreational playgrounds on weekends and holidays.
