EUGENE, Ore.– SELCO Community Credit Union has recently awarded 130 small grants totaling $30,200 in supplemental funding to K-12 schools in its service area as part of its 2007 Teachers' Mini-Grants Program.
Mini-Grants were awarded for up to $250 to educators who submitted lesson plans or projects to the SELCO website beginning in early September through the October 10 deadline. The entries were evaluated for their educational impact, responsible use of funds, and number of students to benefit from the project.
SELCO CEO Bob Newcomb said, "As a credit union founded in 1936 by school employees, we believe in the credit union philosophy of 'people helping people.' We continue the Mini-Grants program because it helps us get dollars right to where they're needed most–the classroom, where they can have the greatest benefit to students. That's the kind of local, community-focused approach that makes credit unions unique in the financial-services industry."

Director of Community Involvement Jan Burch was impressed by the quality of the entries this year.
"We are very fortunate in our community to have so many dedicated educators who strive to maximize the educational opportunities our students receive," said Burch. "We're proud to give them the extra boost they need to implement their innovative lesson plans in the classroom."
The classroom projects chosen ranged from projects focusing on cooking, community gardens, mathematics and physics, to arts, life skills, history, aquatic field studies, and technology.
SELCO has awarded Mini-Grants for more than a decade as a response to local school budget cuts.
