WASHINGTON — A hands-on "extreme hacker lab challenge" will be among highlights of NAFCU's 2008 Technology & Security Conference set for Feb. 25-28 in Las Vegas.

The keynote speaker will be Brad Garrett, a former FBI agent who cracked prominent cases by obtaining confessions in the first World Trade Center bombing and Washington-area sniper attacks.

Other sessions will be led by noted experts in cyber security and computer crime with r?(C)sum?(C)s that include stints with the FDIC, U.S. Justice Department, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and leading firms such as Digital Defense.

NAFCU President Fred Becker notes that hacker attacks on credit unions have increased 62% in the past year and phishing schemes netted fraudsters more than $2.8 billion in 2006.

"There has never been a more critical time for credit unions to redouble their efforts to protect their operations from the mounting security risks," Becker says.
