ST. LOUIS — The Missouri Credit Union Association has launched its "You Make the Difference" Advocacy Rewards Program.

Missouri House Minority Leader Paul LeVota (D-District 52) helped MCUA introduce its new advocacy rewards program during four statewide meetings held in Springfield, St. Louis, Jefferson City and Kansas City. He encouraged credit unions to talk about all the good work that they do in the community to help lawmakers' constituents. "You're not just part of an industry–you're part of a movement," LeVota said. "You're advocating for your members instead of customers, and I think that's very powerful."

The "You Make the Difference" program is designed to help credit unions do just that by rewarding and recognizing Missouri credit unions for their advocacy work.

"There are many different ways to be an advocate and my hope is that everyone will be comfortable participating in some fashion," MCUA Board Chair and United Credit Union President/CEO Betty Clark said. "This is not something that we can afford to 'leave it to the other guy' to take care of. Credit unions need to make advocacy a way of life."

The "You Make a Difference" Advocacy Program helps credit unions track the progress of their efforts in political action, contributions, financial education, philosophy in action, and community involvement. Credit unions receive points for activities in each area with four levels of achievement. The program rewards are all relative to the size, type or field of membership of each credit union.

"As a small credit union, it's easy to get overwhelmed," Dana Alderman, Advocacy Committee member and president of Missouri Baptist Credit Union, said. "'You Make the Difference' really helps organize your thoughts and activities, and I think most credit unions will be surprised at how many things they are already doing to be good advocates."

The MCUA Advocacy Committee, together with MCUA Board members and Credit Union Political Action Committee (CUPAC) trustees developed the program.
