WASHINGTON — From the opening band America to a promotional video featuring Harleys, CUNA's 2008 Governmental Affairs Conference promises to be as American as apple pie.
CUNA has e-mailed a viral video to past GAC attendees to stir up interest. The video features CUNA Chairman Allan Kemp McMorris, president/CEO of Oakland County Credit Union riding his Harley Davidson–with America's Ventura Highway playing in the background–to Washington, D.C. for the big event.
And, what could be more American than participating in the political process? In the video, McMorris tells credit unions, "We need you to speak out in support of our great credit union movement and everything we do for our members. The GAC is where we show our strength in numbers and make sure our collective voice is heard."

"We need you in Washington," McMorris said in the travel-themed video. "Get there by bike, car, train plane–just get there. And when you do, bring a friend." Great Wisconsin Credit Union CEO Kim Sponem then makes a cameo, handing McMorris back is bike helmet, saying she would rather fly.
As of Friday, Nov. 16, 950 had registered for CUNA's GAC versus 230 at the same time last year, according to CUNA Senior Vice President of Communications Mark Wolff who coordinates the program. He said the early numbers are very encouraging but that, given the new location, marketing started a lot earlier this year than it has in the past.
In fact CUNA has also produced another video, featuring President/CEO Dan Mica, taking potential attendees on a tour of the historic and cultural 7th Street area around the Washington Convention Center. This video is available at http://www.cuna.org/events/gac08/index.html.
